A negative pap smear history will warrent a colposcopy to determine if human papilloma virus is present. In 1943, Dr. Papanicolaou published the results of his experiments that turned a turning point in cytology and were instrumental in treating a variety of female diseases. Until now, Papanicolaou test has been considered one of the most reliable ones in detecting cervical cancer.
