Anal Pap Smear
An anal pap smear can be performed both for men and women, but only with cone biopsy and colposcopy it is possible to make a final diagnosis on cervical dysplasia or other disorders.
Women who have cervical dysplasia and HIV infected men are at significant risk for developing cancer of the anus (women 4 times more than men) because they carry HPV-16, a high risk cancer causing form of HPV. Abnormal cytology findings are significant among individuals with history involving the anus.
An anal pap smear can be performed both for men and women, but only with cone biopsy and colposcopy it is possible to make a final diagnosis on cervical dysplasia or other disorders.

As with abnormal cervical cytology, a cytology of abnormal cells from the anus requires further investigation with a high resolution anoscopy and biopsy of suspicious areas. Regular screening becomes important to establish a normal base line for either determining new HPV infection or a progression of disease.
