" When these cells are categorized as atypical, this means the appearance is not normal. The word “squamous” came from the Latin squama meaning "scale of a fish or serpent. Squamous cells are flat cells that look like fish scales. This is a medical term referring to atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance. An important thing to remember is dysplasia does not usually progress to invasive cancer of the cervix.
