Some pap smears abnormal readings suggest the presence of the venereal wart virus or urethritis.
In most cases, ASCUC is treated successfully, whereas precancerous and cancerous cells take longer to be eliminated. Women who have been tested positive should have necessary treatment and repeat Papanicolaou tests until they have normal test results three times in a row.

If the cells taken as a sample during Papanicolaou test appear inflamed, an exact cause should be determined. Abnormalities in the cells may be linked to infections and other diseases. Some cells appear to be atypical (when it is difficult to say if they are cancerous), precancerous, and cancerous.
