An abnormal Pap test may result from cervical cancer or vaginal dysplasia. In nearly all cases of cancer-related conditions of the cervix, HPV is directly linked as the cause. A condition whereby cervical cells are undergoing some uncharacteristic changes is called dysplasia. A diagnosis of dysplasia does not mean the woman will definitively progress to cancer.
