An abnormal Pap test may result from cervical cancer or vaginal dysplasia. In nearly all cases of cancer-related conditions of the cervix, HPV is directly linked as the cause. A condition whereby cervical cells are undergoing some uncharacteristic changes is called dysplasia. A diagnosis of dysplasia does not mean the woman will definitively progress to cancer. However, if mild dysplasia is left unmanaged the possibility of it becoming more serious is greater. An abnormal Pap test may result from cervical cancer or vaginal dysplasia.
