A hysterectomy pap smear is still reccommneded because vaginal dysplasia caused by HPV can still occur. In the absence of other factors, vaginal cancer is uncommon. Thus, only women who have had their uterus removed due to previous diagnosis of carcinoma or have had a history of HPV infection are encouraged to continue with a routine cytology.
